Ernst Borgella, the head of the HYCP: A narrative!

Boukan News, 06/20/2025 – In early May, a conversation took place with Jean Ernst Borgella, who is commonly known in the Haitian community as “Abit Erns.” The discussion centered around an organization that has been active for decades, called “Haitian Youth Cultural for Progress-HYCP.”

In its initial phase, HYCP functioned as an organization focused on training children in the art of Haitian folk dance choreographies, drawing inspiration from the nation’s rich heritage of traditional rhythms. I had the privilege of observing these young performers during their exhibitions, and their stage presence was truly exceptional.

Today, Ernst has introduced chess to the HYCP program. He is supported by Stéphanie Milcent and Melinda Jean-Baptiste in assisting the youth to enhance their skills in chess, traditional Haitian dance, and various other activities. Chess is an intellectual pursuit that fosters patience, a sense of responsibility, and strategic thinking, as it demands intense concentration.

At the Max Myers Recreation Center, a chess game was conducted involving 11 children aged 5 to 13 in a serene environment. The children demonstrated impressive maturity while moving the pieces, under the meticulous oversight of Coach Ernst.

Ernst Borgella, a distinguished former player on the Haitian national chess team, competed in numerous international tournaments held in countries such as Russia, Dubai, Jamaica, Greece, among others. He later served as the Secretary General of the Haitian Chess Federation for several years prior to his resignation. Currently, there are 18 children being trained to excel at chess, with 11 of them already holding membership in the American Chess Federation.

Ernst holds multiple significant responsibilities. He is the sole soccer referee with whom I am personally acquainted, and he is consistently sought after for his expertise in officiating soccer competitions. Additionally, Ernst is highly regarded for his dedication and commitment to various initiatives within the Haitian community of Philadelphia.

He engages in multiple roles including DJ, soccer player, MC, Flag Day organizer, and advocate for the Catholic community. Despite his extensive involvement, he does not seek personal recognition; rather, his dedication and positive demeanor garner respect and admiration within the community.

We extend our warmest regards to Ernst Borgella, as well as to HYCP and its facilitators.
